1. Collect words and phrases that create a sense of danger and foreboding (strange)? -huge wire fence; huge wooden post; enormous bales or barbed wire; tangled in spirals; an unexpected pain inside her as she looked at the sharp spikes sticking out all the way; no greenery anywhere; sand-like substance; nothing but low huts and large square buildings; 1 or 2 smoke stacks in the distance;
2. What is foreshadowing? Gave an example from chapter 1/2. Foreshadowing is when the author gives a hint, or a clue of something bad is going to happen next. An example from chapter 2, page 21 is: “He put his face to the glass and saw what was out there, and this time when his eyes opened wide and his mouth made the shape of an O, his hands stayed by his sides because something made him feel very cold and unsafe.”
